Some Great Snoring Solutions

Anyone that is experiencing the chronic loss of sleep that is associated with constant snoring may be ready for some hardcore, heavy-duty snoring solutions that only their doctor can prescribe.  However, before you run out and start paying for cumbersome mouth devices and breathing machines and putting yourself through surgery, consider that there may actually be some very effective snoring solutions right at your fingertips.  By making just a few changes in your bedroom environment, nighttime routine, or by using some products you may already have in your medicine chest, you may be on to some very affordable, safe, and natural snoring solutions.

Making Changes

If you’re settled into your bedtime routine, chances are it will be somewhat difficult to make any changes, no matter how small they are.  If you have a nighttime snack and then brush, floss, rinse, have a glass of beer and take one last drag on that cigarette before going to bed, you may not even realize what you’re doing every night as you go through the motions.  But part of your snoring solutions may mean making some changes to that routine.  For one thing, that nighttime snack might be making it difficult for you to breathe at night if it’s very difficult to digest, or includes meats and dairy products.  Most snoring solutions involve keeping the air passages open, but when you eat foods that are hard to digest, your body diverts oxygen to your stomach and intestines.  Make your snack something light, such as fruit.

Also, those products that you use for oral hygiene may contain alcohol, and alcohol is very drying to your mouth and throat.  Part of your snoring solutions would be to switch to products that contain no alcohol; these are easily advertised in the oral care section of your local pharmacy, so all you need to do is read the labels. 

Alcohol and smoking are counterproductive to any snoring solutions you may try, as both dry the mouth, the throat, and all the areas involved in breathing, and this in turn leads to snoring.  If you can’t quit either one, don’t indulge for at least two hours before bedtime, and rinse you mouth out well with some of those alcohol free products we’ve just mentioned.

Using Some Additional Products for Snoring Solutions

Anything that opens your nasal passages to allow you to breathe freer is going to be part of your snoring solutions, so check your medicine cabinet or pantry.  Do you have any menthol products, such as cough drops or chest rubs?  Try these before you go to bed to open up blocked sinuses, coat your throat, and help you breathe clearer and freer.

If you live in a dry climate or it’s the winter months, try simmering a pot of water on the stove and breathing in the humid vapors for a few minutes before bedtime (being careful not to burn yourself of course).  All these are simple and natural snoring solutions that are probably right at your fingertips!

Use a Sleeping Pill for Snoring Relief

Wanting to get some snoring relief is only natural for everyone suffering the effects of chronic sleeplessness.  Having to face that blaring alarm clock and rush hour traffic when you have gotten enough sleep is tough enough, but when you’ve been up all night, it’s nearly impossible.  Many people wonder then if they should turn to a sleeping pill for some snoring relief.  Obviously only your doctor can really advise you on whether or not sleeping pills are safe or dangerous for you, but there are some things we can give you to think about here, and then perhaps you can make the best decision possible.

Warnings With Sleeping Pills

Before quickly choosing them for snoring relief, first read the label of any brand of sleeping pill, even those you get over the counter at your local pharmacy.  You’ll see some pretty heavy-duty warnings printed in plain black and white.  For one thing, you’re not supposed to have any alcohol before taking the sleeping pill, as this can cause an increase in the risk of liver damage.  If you’re looking for some snoring relief in the form of a sleeping pill but are used to that nightly glass of beer or wine before bedtime, you’re doing some heavy damage to your system.

Also, the warning label will probably also tell you that you need to be able to devote an entire night to sleep before taking the pill.  This is because it takes some time for the effects of the pill to wear off, so if you force yourself to get up while the medication is still in your system, you can be fighting a narcotic effect all day.  What is the point of trying to get some snoring relief if the pill you take makes you just as drowsy, or even more so?

Too Deep of Sleep With Sleeping Pills

Another reason to think twice about using sleeping pills for snoring relief is that many sleeping pills can cause you to have too deep of sleep for too long, which is actually very damaging to your system.  This deep sleep is difficult for your body to regulate and get itself out of.  And if you do this night after night, you may think you’re getting some snoring relief, but are really causing your metabolism to slow down.

Real Snoring Relief

If your snoring or the snoring of the person in bed with you is so bad and so chronic that it’s consistently interfering with your sleep and causing you problems during the day, it’s time to talk to your doctor about some real snoring relief.  He or she can recommend some options for natural substances you can try in the form or sprays or drops or syrups, or some other ways that you can improve your health and your sleeping environment.  Rather than rely on a narcotic that can be more damaging to you in the long run than the snoring, get serious about treatment options and speak to your doctor.

There may be a very simple solution to finding out if you have a snoring problem, and that’s to ask the person sleeping next to you if they notice it.  Of course, the look on their face every day, or the fact that they’ve tried to smother you with a pillow on more than one occasion, may give you the answer you’re looking for.  But if you live alone, or the person with you hasn’t really noticed, how can you be sure if your snoring problem is serious and warrants intervention, or if it’s just something trivial?

Most people snore to one extent or another, and there are other breathing noises that we confuse with snoring, including gasping, choking, wheezing, snorting, and so on.  A minor few noises during the night probably doesn’t constitute an actual snoring problem, however, sometimes the person who snores is not the one most affected by it.  You might think that you only have a slight snoring problem when in reality the person you sleep with is having tremendous health difficulties because of their chronic insomnia due to your snoring.

So how can you tell if your snoring problem is serious?  There is no real medical test that one can go through short of a trial in a sleeping clinic.  Most don’t need to go to those extremes, however.  Simply consider the symptoms of a chronic lack of sleep and ask yourself if you or your companion have any of these.

For instance, you probably know that a lack of sleep causes one to be restless, irritable, and downright moody the next day.  However, chronic insomnia can interfere with concentration, problem solving, test scores, and job performance.  You may have a snoring problem if you notice these issues are suddenly affecting you when they didn’t before.

A chronic snoring problem can also cause issues for the person who does snore.  If you are choking and gasping for air, your brain may actually not be getting enough oxygen on a regular basis.  This can lead to headaches and dizziness throughout the day.  A snoring problem also affects the mouth and throat.  As the tissues and membranes in the throat vibrate to cause the noise of snoring, they are damaging themselves at the same time.  If you are always waking up with a sore throat that feels raw and irritated, this may be another clue as to the severity of your snoring.

Most snoring problems can be readily addressed with over the counter products, a snore pillow, or with medical intervention from your doctor.  You can also try natural remedies such as a vaporizer with added eucalyptus or menthol oil, or an open jar of marjoram next to the bed at night.  Nasal strips also work well for many that have tried them.  But the bottom line is that there is no reason to let your snoring problems affect your health or the health of the person next to you.
