Try Snoring Prevention

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

There’s an old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and you can apply that thinking to just about anything in your life, from health to finances to personal relationships.  Avoiding a problem in the first place is a lot better than trying to figure out how to fix it after!  And as for getting a good night’s sleep, isn’t it better to practice snoring prevention than to work hard to fix the problem once you realize you’re losing sleep?

If you know some of the common reasons for why people snore, then you can be well on your way to successful snoring prevention, so let’s examine a few of those here.

Being overweight and obese is a common reason for snoring.  This is because when you’re overweight, you have a tendency to carry extra weight around your neck and upper body, even if you don’t notice it that much.  A good step toward snoring prevention is to keep your body weight at a healthy level, as this excess fat has a tendency to cut off the airway around your throat and down your bronchial tubes.  You don’t need to be excessively overweight for this to happen; even twenty extra pounds is enough to keep a person snoring all night.  So it may be a difficult step toward snoring prevention, but keeping yourself at a good weight is going to keep you from one of the most common reasons that many people snore.

Another common reason for snoring is smoking.  When a person smokes, they dry out their throat, mouth, tongue, and every part of their respiratory system.  All advice geared toward snoring prevention will tell you that you need to keep your throat and nasal passages moist and hydrated, as snoring is caused by air vibrating against this dry tissue.

Smoking also causes an enormous amount of damage to your lungs, bronchial tubes, nasal cavities, and everything else.  Sometimes the sound that someone makes when they’re trying to breathe, such as choking, gasping, snorting, and so on, is confused with actual snoring.  While they are technically different sounds, avoiding smoking as a way of snoring prevention will keep you from gasping and choking for breath throughout the night as well.

Another aspect of snoring prevention has to do with keeping yourself adequately hydrated throughout the day so that you don’t have a dry mouth and throat at night.  Drink plenty of water or other liquids, eat foods that are juicy and high in water content such as fruits and vegetables, and avoid red meats and dairy products.

If you pay attention to all these tips when it comes to snoring prevention, you may find that you never actually develop the habit in the first place.  Remember, while some cases of snoring are due to inherited reasons, many cases are because of things that a person is doing to themselves.  So definitely, an ounce of prevention is worth that pound of cure!
